About The Process

Recent Upgrades / Improvements / Changes

In the summer of 2010, URR commissioned a third-party expert to undertake a complete assessment of the facility, process and operations, as well as develop and implement a plan to improve our operations and odour control.

As a result, the following improvements have been completed:

Improvements to compost recipe/mix and increased aeration – to improve the aerobic processing of the organic material.

In-depth odour monitoring of process in channels and stack – to ensure optimal process performance.

New Automated air-handling system – to constantly and consistently monitor and data-track air temperatures, relative humidity, oxygen levels, temperatures of compost and many other variables, and programmed to respond immediately to abnormal readings.

Upgrades to Air Phaser system – to run at higher power levels and improve performance in handling all the odours in the facility.

New oil screen filters – to improve the performance of the Air Phaser system.

New bio-scrubbing water-washing system – to capture the water soluble odour causing compounds (many of the odour causing compounds are water soluble) in the air stream.

New ozone monitors – to ensure accurate ozone tracking and optimal performance of Air Phaser system.

Additional dehumidifying systems – to take moisture out of the air and increase the effectiveness of the Air Phaser odour control system.

Adding in-line heaters - to more effectively disperse emissions from the stack to the air stream.

New Stack Extensions  - to allow increased blending of outside air in the stacks with any trace remaining odour molecules still in the air stream for better dilution.

Environmental Performance

Universal Resource Recovery operates MOE Regulation 417. URR meets all the Ministry of Environment’s emission standards under Regulation 417.

Our compost, as well, exceeds the standards set out by the Ministry of Environment.

Protecting the Environment

Protecting the environment by diverting waste from landfills and recycling it into high-grade compost is what Universal Resource Recovery’s business is all about.

Other sustainable business practices include:

  • Capture and treatment of all water and wastewater from the facility.
Getting Better Together

Have a complaint?

If you have a complaint we want to hear about it.  The only way we get better is if we know when there may be a problem.
