SSO Composting
The process of turning 35,000 tonnes annually of Source Separated Organics (SSO) into compost is similar to what happens in compost bins in backyards all over the world, just on a much larger scale.
Simply put, raw organic waste from your green bin is mixed with wood chips from construction waste and fed into a composting channel. Composting temperatures of 55 to 65° C are maintained by powerful centrifugal blowers that provide air to the composting material which is mixed once or twice every week using a Compost Turner for between four to eight weeks.
Moisture, air and mechanical turning enhance the process and allow the natural microorganisms responsible for breaking down the materials to work faster than they would in the natural environment.
